What the Dark Keeps is a painting about what is held rather than shown.
Magnolia and eucalyptus rise out of a ground so dark it reads as almost nothing at first. The blooms are built in heavy impasto, thick enough that the paint casts its own small shadows across the surface. Behind them the ground stays quiet and withholding. Light is rationed across the canvas, given to a few petals and denied nearly everywhere else, so the eye finds the flowers long before it finds anything surrounding them.
Throughout A Series in Flowers, darkness has served as setting. Here it becomes the subject. The ground is full of things kept back: forms that almost surface, colors that appear only after prolonged looking, passages that resolve differently depending on the hour and the light. What the painting withholds is as deliberate as what it offers.
Painted at monumental scale, the work was made to be met in person. At nine feet tall and five and a half feet wide, it does not resolve from across a room. The impasto, the shifts within the dark, and the places where the ground opens into color all ask to be approached.
