No Box Left is a painting about refusing the shape you were given.
Blooms crowd the canvas from edge to edge, round and heavy and overlapping, gathered into a pale vase that glows against the dark surrounding it. Nothing in the composition is square. The flowers, the vase, and the shapes pressed into the ground behind them are all curves, and not one of them sits inside a border. The forms push past each other, past the foliage, and past the edges of the canvas itself.
The paint is laid on thickly throughout, built up until the blooms hold their own ridges and cast their own shadows across the surface. The vase is the one passage where the light is allowed to gather, and it holds the eye at the middle of a composition that is otherwise pressing outward.
Throughout A Series in Flowers, the blooms stand in for emotional states, personal histories, and transformation. In No Box Left, the subject is occupation. These flowers were not arranged to fit a container. They were painted at the size they wanted to be, and the container gave way around them.
The title names what the painting withholds as much as what it shows. There is no frame inside the image, no grid, no straight line holding anything in position. What remains is a gathering that has outgrown every shape offered to it and is not apologizing for the room it takes.
At its heart, No Box Left is about what happens when something grows past the container that was made for it.
