Flowers as Language

Contemporary floral paintings exploring memory, identity, resilience, and transformation.

A Series in Flowers is a body of large-scale oil paintings exploring self-perception, ambiguity, grief, beauty, resilience, and the freedom of taking up space. Through layered color, visible brushwork, and recurring floral imagery, Erin Smith uses flowers as an emotional language for the parts of experience that rarely fit into a single story.

These paintings hold contradiction: celebration and mourning, tenderness and intensity, visibility and reflection, joy and grief. What begins as a bouquet becomes a meditation on becoming — on making room for complexity, sensitivity, memory, transformation, and the self fully inhabited.

No Box Left
$10,500.00

The flagship work of A Series in Flowers, No Box Left is a painting about no longer shrinking to fit spaces that were never meant to contain you.No Box Left is the painting that became the center of A Series in Flowers.

Created as a reflection on visibility, self-acceptance, and the freedom of taking up space, the work began with a simple realization: growth often requires outgrowing the containers that once felt necessary. Flowers spill beyond their vessel, extending past expected boundaries and refusing containment. What begins as a bouquet becomes a meditation on becoming.

Throughout the series, flowers act as emotional language for identity, memory, grief, resilience, and transformation. In No Box Left, they become symbols of expansion. The blooms no longer bend themselves to fit. They occupy space fully, unapologetically, and with a sense of earned confidence.

At 66 × 72 inches, the painting's scale is central to its meaning. The oversized composition transforms a traditional still life into something monumental, allowing the flowers to command the space rather than quietly decorate it. The work asks viewers to consider the ways they have made themselves smaller and what becomes possible when they no longer do.

At its heart, No Box Left is about permission. Permission to grow beyond expectations. Permission to become more fully visible. Permission to inhabit space without apology.

Seen/ Unseen
$4,800.00

Seen / Unseen asks a simple but complicated question: How much of ourselves is ever truly visible?

Layers of flowers, reflections, and shifting forms emerge and dissolve across the surface, mirroring the way identity is experienced in real life. We are constantly navigating the space between what we feel internally and what others are able to perceive. Some parts of ourselves remain visible and legible, while others stay hidden, protected, or difficult to name.

Throughout A Series in Flowers, reflection serves as both a visual device and a metaphor. In Seen / Unseen, the bouquet becomes a stand-in for the self, fragmented and layered, revealing itself only in pieces. Moments of clarity exist alongside ambiguity, creating a painting that rewards prolonged looking and invites multiple interpretations.

Rather than offering answers, the work embraces uncertainty. Forms appear, disappear, and reappear, much the way memory, identity, and self-understanding evolve over time. The painting becomes a meditation on perception, reminding us that what is visible is only part of the story.

At its heart, Seen / Unseen is about complexity. It honors the parts of ourselves that are openly shared and the parts that remain known only to us.

Mirror Bloom
$7,800.00

Mirror Bloom is a painting about growth, self-acceptance, and the ways we come to recognize ourselves over time.

Layers of flowers unfold across the canvas, opening outward with a sense of confidence and ease. Reflection plays a central role in the work, both literally and metaphorically, suggesting the distance between how we see ourselves and how we are seen by others. Forms appear, overlap, and echo one another, creating a visual language of becoming rather than arrival.

Throughout A Series in Flowers, flowers serve as stand-ins for emotional states, personal histories, and transformation. In Mirror Bloom, expansion becomes the subject. The blooms no longer apologize for their size or presence. Instead, they occupy space fully, becoming a meditation on confidence, visibility, and self-worth.

Painted at a monumental scale, Mirror Bloom was created to be lived with. The work shifts throughout the day as light moves across the surface, revealing layers of color, texture, and brushwork that reward prolonged looking.

At its heart, Mirror Bloom is a celebration of growth, not as perfection, but as the willingness to open, expand, and become more fully oneself.
